The name "Non Plus Ultra" is Latin for roughly "nothing further beyond," a boast of unsurpassed quality that makers often used on tobacco labels. This example was printed in color around 1930 by Klingenberg G.m.b.H. of Detmold, Germany, and its catalog number and sheet mark show it was one of a numbered series. Its subject headings tie it to the cigar trade and to women, reflecting how advertisers of the period used stylish imagery to sell tobacco. Photomechanical color printing made such labels affordable in large runs, so surviving examples offer a useful view of commercial design in the 1920s and 1930s.
