A man's head and shoulders, turned to the right, rise above a waterfront scene on this cigar box label, all framed by a border of gold coins. H. & A. Brüning of Hanau am Main printed it around 1930, when German lithographic firms produced many colorful labels for the tobacco trade. Manufacturers used such eye-catching paper to set their boxes apart on crowded shop shelves. The pairing of a personal portrait, a waterfront view, and coin motifs suggests the label aimed to convey prosperity and a sense of far-reaching trade, a common appeal in cigar branding of the period. The record does not identify the sitter or the specific waterfront.
