The label carries the title "The Power of Fashion," a phrase that signals what the maker hoped buyers would associate with its cigars. Printed labels like this one were pasted onto boxes and bundles in the 19th century, when color lithography made inexpensive, eye-catching art widely available and manufacturers competed for attention in crowded shops. The name Defiance suggests a manufacturer eager to stand out in that rivalry. Today such labels serve as compact records of advertising style, consumer taste and everyday graphic design.
