Few subjects appear more often in the Bain News Service files than Theodore Roosevelt, and this glass negative is catalogued simply as "T.R. Roosevelt," with no date and a title the Bain Service itself marked as unverified. That caption is the main clue to its origin, since the Bain agency supplied news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s onward, when Roosevelt was president and then a frequent public figure. Portraits from that era were often made quickly for wire distribution, so the image reflects the working practice of a press photographer as much as the man himself. The plate is one of a large group from George Grantham Bain's collection now held by the Library of Congress.
