A lithograph portrait of Theodore Roosevelt, carrying a printed caption beneath the image, places the president in the form of a popular print that was widely reproduced and sold during his years in public life. Roosevelt rose from New York state politics to the vice presidency and then the presidency after William McKinley's assassination in 1901, and his vigorous public image made him a favorite subject for printmakers. Captioned portraits like this one were often sold as keepsakes or displayed in homes and offices, so the printed text is worth reading closely for the way it framed the man to the public.
