A large 8 by 10 inch glass negative makes this one of the more substantial plates in the George Grantham Bain Collection, and its label reads simply "T. Roosevelt." The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, sold press photographs of politicians, celebrities, and news events, and Theodore Roosevelt, president from 1901 to 1909, was one of its most photographed subjects. The record does not give a date, and the title comes from the agency's own notes, which were not independently checked. Glass plates like this one were the standard for newspaper and agency work in the early twentieth century, and their sharp detail is part of why such portraits still hold up.
