Theodore Roosevelt was New York's governor in 1899, a post he had taken up after his return from the Spanish-American War, where he had led the Rough Riders in Cuba. This portrait was made for McClure's Magazine, a leading illustrated monthly of the day that was known for investigative journalism and for its interest in public figures. Magazine portraits of the period were often posed to project vigor and reform-minded seriousness, which suited Roosevelt's rising national profile. The picture is a useful record of how a figure who had become a national celebrity was presented to the reading public at the turn of the century.
