The RKO State Lake theater, at the corner of State and Lake streets in Chicago's Loop, is the subject of this 1932 ink drawing, one of the architectural and engineering drawings the Library of Congress holds for theaters of the period. The State Lake opened in 1921 as a vaudeville and movie palace, and by the early 1930s it had become part of the RKO circuit, which was consolidating Chicago's large downtown houses. Drawings like this one record a building's plan and structure in precise detail, so they show how a major 1920s-era theater was laid out and built as well as how it was presented to the public.
