This ink drawing shows two theaters standing side by side on North Dearborn Street at East Lake Street, the Harris and the Selwyn, rather than a single building. Both were legitimate stage houses in Chicago's downtown Loop, built in the early 1920s as the city's theater district expanded. The 1924 date places the drawing during the years when Chicago's theaters were competing for audiences with the growing number of motion picture houses, which the record also lists as a subject. Drawings like this one show how architects planned sightlines, lobbies, and street frontage in a dense commercial block.
