A cross-section of the United States Capitol, labeled with the name of S. Hallet, shows the building cut open to reveal how its interior spaces and roof were meant to fit together. The drawing is built from ink and graphite lines, with watercolor and wash added for tone. Stephen Hallet, a French-trained architect, was one of the men who worked on the Capitol's design in the early 1790s, before his role ended in a dispute with the commissioners overseeing the project. The inscription also notes that this is a reference copy, so it documents a design stage rather than the finished building.
