The title points to a ship launch, with NEW YORK in capitals as the subject, though the record notes that this wording comes from unverified caption data and gives no date. The Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency active in New York from about 1900 into the 1920s, produced the glass negatives in this collection, and its pictures of ship launches and waterfront events were made for newspaper use. Launch ceremonies drew large crowds of dignitaries, sponsors and workers gathered on the shipyard ways, so these photographs often capture the crowd as much as the hull. The small 5 by 7 inch format was common for news work of the period.
