Here William Howard Taft, the 27th president, appears at the launch of the battleship *New York*, one of the U.S. Navy's dreadnought-era warships. Battleships were then the main measure of naval strength, so a launching drew officials, naval officers and onlookers to the shipyard. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied newspapers. Its title comes from caption data the service recorded, so the details of the event are not fully verified.
