A small glass negative bears the name David J. Walsh and the date April 2, 1923, though the title and year come from data the National Photo Company noted on the negative sleeve and have not been independently verified. The National Photo Company was a Washington, D.C., commercial studio whose glass plates, made in large numbers in the early twentieth century, document the city and its people. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, the result of natural deterioration in the original coatings, a common condition in plates of this age. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French.
