The title points to the Easter parade, a long-standing custom in New York in which churchgoers and well-dressed strollers filled Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday to show off new spring clothes and hats. This glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York photo agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title was supplied by the agency's own records and has not been independently verified, so the scene itself is worth studying closely. Glass negatives like this one preserve fine detail in clothing, hats, and street life from 1911.
