Taken from the steeple of St. Michael's Church, this view looks out over the rooftops of Charleston, South Carolina, from a height few visitors could reach. The Anglican church on Broad Street was completed in 1761, and its tower long served as a landmark for mariners approaching the port. This card is number 49 in a series of Southern views issued in stereograph form, meant to be seen through a stereoscope for a sense of depth. The card has no recorded date, so its exact year is unknown, but it is worth studying for how the spires and streets of an old Southern port look from above.
