Its title names a bicycle rather than a place: "Cleveland" was the name of an American bicycle brand, and this lithograph advertised it to French riders during the cycling boom of the 1890s. The artist signed simply "Pal," the pen name of the French caricaturist Jean de Paléologue, and the Paris firm of Paul Dupont printed many of the period's color posters. The subject headings also tie the sheet to the portrayal of Indians of North America, a theme that appeared often in commercial art of the time and is worth viewing with that context in mind.
