A dinner party at the Whitelaw Hotel on U Street, captured by the Scurlock studio in December 1927, anchors this portrait of Perry W. Howard, a Mississippi-born lawyer and Republican politician active in Washington. The Whitelaw was one of the city's best-known hotels for Black travelers and residents, and it sat at the center of the U Street neighborhood's social and cultural life in the 1920s. Scurlock's studio documented Black Washington's professional and social circles for decades, so the image offers a glimpse of the formal dining rooms and gatherings of the city's middle class during the Jazz Age.
