*Cercle populaire*, or "popular club," is a plate from *A Modern City*, a 1922 London publication of designs by the Belgian-born French architect Rob Mallet-Stevens. Rather than showing a single finished building, the color lithograph presents a social hall as one part of a larger imagined urban plan, with the clean planes and stacked volumes that made Mallet-Stevens a leading figure in early modernist design. It shows how architects of the 1920s pictured clubhouses as civic spaces where ordinary residents could meet. The British publisher's decision to reproduce it also reflects how quickly continental modern architecture was spreading across Europe after the First World War.
