Taken on February 27, 1930, this portrait records the first meeting of the Washington Bicentennial directors in Washington, D.C., with Sol Bloom and Ulysses S. Grant III among those named in the record. Bloom, a New York congressman, was a leading figure in the national effort to mark the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth in 1732, which was observed in 1932. The commission planned celebrations across the country in the years before that milestone. Its early organizing sessions, like this one, set the agenda for the commemorations that followed.
