Few places in Washington tie more directly to Theodore Roosevelt's love of the outdoors than the wooded island in the Potomac that bears his name. This view shows a rocky cliff along its shoreline, a reminder of how much of the island has been kept in a natural state. Roosevelt, a naturalist who set aside millions of acres of public land during his presidency, is honored here with a memorial that includes a large bronze statue of him, dedicated in 1967. The island remains a quiet green refuge a short distance from the capital's monuments.
