Few things mark the Potomac shoreline quite like the wooden-looking brown sign that greets visitors to Theodore Roosevelt Island, a 88.5-acre wooded refuge in the river just north of Washington. The island was set aside in memory of the 26th president, who championed conservation and the creation of national parks and forests during his time in office from 1901 to 1909. Its trails, swamp and forest were preserved largely as a natural landscape, a deliberate contrast to the monumental city across the water. Signs like this one show how the National Park Service presented the island to the public as a place for quiet walks and reflection.
