This lithograph stands out for its Portuguese text, which tells men across the Territory of Hawaii, of any nationality and ages 21 to 31, to register in their own precincts. That bilingual appeal reflects the islands' large Portuguese community, many of whose members had come to work on sugar plantations from the late 1870s onward. The poster was issued by the Central Board of Registration under the selective draft, which the United States adopted after entering the First World War in 1917. Its soldier and flag imagery follows the recruiting style of the period, urging civic duty as the nation mobilized.
