This poster speaks to the men of the Territory of Hawaii, and its Portuguese text, set alongside the English, reflects how many Portuguese-speaking workers had come to the islands to labor on sugar plantations. It tells men aged 21 to 31, "of any nationality," to register in their own precinct under the selective draft, which Congress enacted in 1917 after the United States entered World War I. Posters like this one, with flags and recruiting appeals, were a main way local boards reached residents who might not follow the mainland press.
