Rather than showing a scene, this color poster advertises a coming series, promising that the Columbian Exposition "will be completely illustrated" in Harper's Weekly across 1891 and 1892, well before the fair opened. The Chicago exposition of 1893 marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's arrival in the Americas, and illustrated weeklies like Harper's, the New York journal published by Harper & Brothers, helped build public interest in it. Its advance billing shows how the fair was promoted in print long before visitors arrived. The date and copyright credit come from an old caption card and remain unverified.
