A poster advertising a regional poster exhibition is an unusual subject, and this silkscreen print, sponsored by the Federal theater Project, announces a show about the posters themselves. The Federal Art Project's poster unit used the stencil process to produce inexpensive announcements for plays, concerts, and exhibitions across the country during the 1930s. The verso bears a June 1939 date stamp, which suggests the print stayed in circulation or storage well after its original 1936 date. Its subject, an art exhibition in New York State, places it within the wider effort to bring art and public events to ordinary audiences during the Depression.
