The record identifies this glass negative only by the title "Hancock," which may refer to Union General Winfield Scott Hancock, though the sleeve note is unverified. The date is also uncertain: the record gives 1860, while a pencil note on the negative's tape reads 1877, and the image was once credited to Alexander Gardner. The wet collodion process, which coated glass plates just before exposure, was the standard method for portraits and documentary views from the early 1850s into the 1880s, so the medium fits the Civil War era. Its place in the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection shows how these fragile plates preserved the period's images.
