Soldiers scrambling up the flank of a great eagle set this French poster apart from the many wartime images of troops marching forward. Its title, "Un dernier effort et on l'aura," translates as "One last effort and we will get them," a call to press on that fit the Allied mood in 1917, the year the United States entered the war and began its own loan and recruitment campaigns. The eagle likely stands for the German imperial emblem, so the climb becomes a figure for the final push against the enemy. The large color lithograph, about 120 by 79 centimeters, was built for bold display on a public wall.
