Rather than a recruiting or bond appeal, this 1918 poster for the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris casts "the Great War" as a test of national effort and shared purpose. The Luxembourg was then the state's museum for living artists, one of the city's most visible cultural institutions, so a wartime notice issued from it suggests that culture was expected to sustain the national effort alongside the army and industry. By 1918 the war had dragged on for more than four years, and appeals like this one aimed to keep civilians committed through its final months.
