Few Vienna wartime posters point so directly to the Ottoman front as this one, which announces portraits and sketches made in Turkey during the First World War. The Ottoman Empire had entered the war on the side of the Central Powers in late 1914, so Austro-Hungarian artists could work in its lands as allies. Exhibitions of such work at the Künstlerhaus, the home of the Vienna artists' association, presented the alliance to the home public through faces and scenes from a distant campaign.
