Uncle Sam, a clock, and a farming scene come together in this 1918 color lithograph, which pairs the poster's "Get your hoe ready!" caption with a headline announcing Congress's passage of a daylight saving bill. Congress approved the measure that March as a wartime step to conserve coal and fuel while the United States was fighting in Europe. Farmers, who had to adjust their work to the shifted clock, were among its loudest critics, and the law was repealed in 1919. The artist signed only with a monogram, so the maker remains unidentified.
