Few pictures in the World War I set argue for industrial peace on the home front quite like this one, which imagines a whole town as a single commercial street. Issued in 1917 by the National Industrial Conservation Movement, a New York organization, the lithograph carries a long subtitle urging citizens to protect local industry from unfair laws, excessive taxation, and labor disputes that might slow production during the war. Its message is that patriotism and economic stability were meant to go hand in hand, with the home town cast as the place where that duty was carried out.
