Columbus sailed from the port of Palos in August 1492 with three ships, beginning the voyage that would reach the Caribbean that October, and this print takes that moment of departure as its subject. It was registered for copyright around 1883, a period when printmakers and publishers often produced engraved and lithographed scenes from the Columbian story, which was then a popular subject in paintings and illustrated histories. The record gives little information about the maker, so the image is best read as part of the nineteenth-century habit of retelling the departure as the heroic start of the voyage.
