Leutze's 1842 painting shows the moment in 1500 when Christopher Columbus arrived at the Spanish port of Cadiz in chains, after the royal governor Francisco de Bobadilla had him arrested on Hispaniola. Stephen Alonzo Schoff's engraving translates that scene into a black-and-white image for wider circulation in the 1840s, when American audiences were eager for heroic episodes from the Age of Discovery. Leutze, a German-born painter who worked in Düsseldorf before settling in the United States, chose a moment of humiliation rather than triumph, which makes the image a study in the fragility of a celebrated explorer's reputation.
