The Museo Poey takes its name from Felipe Poey, the nineteenth-century naturalist known for his studies of Cuban fish and other island wildlife. This photograph, dated somewhere between 1935 and 1947, shows the museum at the University of Havana during a period when the city was a busy center of Cuban public life. Poey's specimens and writings helped form the scientific collections that visitors encountered on display. The picture offers a useful view of how natural history collections were housed and presented in the mid-twentieth century.
