This drawing is a perspective study of roof tile, made for the United States Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. The architect Cass Gilbert designed the marble courthouse, which was built between 1932 and 1935 across from the Capitol. Working drawings like this one, done in graphite and colored pencil, show how the building's roofing was to be laid out and assembled, so they reveal the practical decisions behind the finished exterior. Gilbert's papers, which hold this sheet, preserve much of the planning behind the project.
