Rather than a summit view alone, this engraving places an Indian encampment in the foreground of the Rocky Mountains, the subject that sets it apart from other views on the board. Albert Bierstadt, a German-born painter, had traveled in the West in 1859 with a federal survey party, and his name is signed on the plate beneath the 1863 date. The print was entered for copyright in 1866 under an Act of Congress, a period when the Rockies were a major theme in American landscape painting and Bierstadt's large canvases drew wide public attention.
