Connecticut College for Women, later Connecticut College, was taking shape on the hills above New London in 1920, only a few years after it opened its doors to its first students in 1915. The city below was a working river port on the Thames, where shipping, coastal trade, and the shipyards across the water in Groton shaped daily life. Electric Boat, which had begun building submarines in Groton in 1899, was the best-known industrial employer in the region, and naval work drew many families to the area. In 1920 the nation had just entered Prohibition, and New London residents, like others along the shore, were adjusting to new limits on the saloons and social habits that had long filled the waterfront. For the young women enrolled on the new campus, the setting offered a view of harbor traffic and a sense that the college was a fresh addition to a town with a long maritime past.
