Washington in 1893 was a capital whose mood soured within months of Grover Cleveland's second inauguration in March. The Panic of 1893 spread through banks and railroads that summer, and federal gold reserves fell to alarming levels, so officials and office workers followed the news from New York and Chicago closely. Many Washingtonians also turned their attention to the World's Columbian Exposition, which opened in Chicago that May and drew visitors and newspaper coverage away from the capital. The photograph shows a city of broad avenues and government buildings, but the year's money troubles reached every boarding house and shop that depended on federal paychecks.
