This view shows the Columbus Fountain, the monument to the explorer that stands in the plaza fronting Union Station in Washington, D.C. The fountain, set in the open space of Columbus Plaza, was a civic landmark that greeted travelers arriving by rail at the capital's main station. The photograph was taken in 1942, when Union Station was especially busy with wartime troop movements and government travel. Pictures like this one document how the plaza looked during those years, when the station and its surroundings served as a daily gateway to the city.
