Few Yellowstone features were described in more dramatic terms than Giantess, which this engraving shows throwing a column of water to a stated height of 250 feet. Giantess sits in the Upper Geyser Basin, a short walk from Old Faithful, and its eruptions were irregular and hard to predict, which made it a prize for early visitors and surveyors. In the decades after the park was established in 1872, engravings like this one were often how readers far from the West pictured its thermal wonders, and the height given reflects the wonder-struck estimates of the day more than precise measurement.
