Old Faithful, the geyser that gives Yellowstone one of its best-known sights, is shown here in full eruption, with its column of water and steam rising high above the surrounding ground. The geyser was named in 1870 by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition, whose members noticed how regularly it erupted compared with the park's other thermal features. Its fairly predictable schedule, usually every hour or so, made it an easy draw for early visitors, and it helped establish the park as a destination for tourists. Photographs like this one captured a sight that was hard to convey in words, and they played a part in building public support for protecting Yellowstone as the nation's first national park.
