Ice formed by windblown spray is the particular subject here: the "congealed spray" of the title refers to the frozen mass that built up along the rocks and railings near the falls in winter, when mist from the cataract froze wherever it landed. This stereograph, a paired-image card from around 1899, was made for viewing through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a three-dimensional look that was popular in parlors of the period. Views of Niagara's ice formations were a staple of the stereograph trade, since the falls drew steady tourist traffic and winter scenes showed a side of the site that summer photographs did not.
