The portrait is a halftone reproduction of a painting inscribed on its reverse with the name William Birch, the English-born Philadelphia artist. The sitter, Constantine Samuel Rafinesque, was born in Constantinople in 1783 to a French father and a German mother. He settled in Philadelphia and became one of the most prolific and eccentric naturalists of his day, naming many plants, fishes, and shells of the American interior. Halftone printing rendered photographic tones with dots of ink, so the image reached readers through books and periodicals rather than as the original canvas. No date is recorded for this reproduction, so its origin should be treated as uncertain.
