Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its mass-produced lithographs, issued this view of Philadelphia in 1875, a year before the city hosted the Centennial Exposition that drew national attention. The firm produced thousands of prints on subjects from city streets to rural scenes, sold cheaply to a broad middle-class market that hung them in parlors and offices. Philadelphia, founded by William Penn in 1682, was already a major manufacturing and commercial center by the 1870s. The print is worth studying for how it presents the city to viewers in the decade after the Civil War, when American cities were growing quickly and their boosters liked to show them as prosperous and orderly.
