The only identification for this glass negative is the name "Sir Aug. Fitz George," which comes from the Bain News Service caption cards and has not been verified. The Bain service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied newspapers and magazines with news and portrait photographs in the early twentieth century, and its workers often recorded names quickly and sometimes imperfectly. Glass negatives of this small size were a common working format for the period, valued for sharp detail and for making prints that could be reproduced in print. Researchers should treat the name as a lead to check against other sources rather than a confirmed fact.
