Its title names Henry George Jr., the son of the economist Henry George, whose 1879 book *Progress and Poverty* made him one of the most widely read American social critics of his day. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced most of the negatives in the George Grantham Bain Collection, and its glass plates typically captured politicians, public figures, and newsworthy events in the early 1900s. The record gives no date, and the identification comes from the agency's caption cards and negative sleeves, which the Library of Congress notes are unverified, so the sitter's identity is best treated as provisional.
