The pairing of a congressman and his wife in a single glass negative reflects how the Bain News Service worked: it produced quick portraits of public figures for newspaper use. The library's title comes from identifying information the agency wrote on the negative or its caption card, and that data is unverified, so the names and occasion should be treated as provisional. George Grantham Bain founded his news photo service in New York in the early 1900s, and its glass plates, made mostly through the 1910s and 1920s, show how press photographers worked before wire transmission became common. The small glass format is worth noticing, since each image had to be developed, printed and captioned by hand before reaching an editor.
