A glass negative of President Woodrow Wilson and his wife, Edith, comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, the press archive of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that sold news photographs to newspapers from the early 1900s until the 1920s. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption cards that the agency itself did not verify, so the exact occasion is uncertain. Wilson served as president from 1913 to 1921, a period when news photographers were gaining access to the White House and its family life. Pictures like this one show how the presidency was presented to the public in those years.
