Standing in full length beside an unidentified man, Franklin Delano Roosevelt appears in this photograph from about 1920, a period when he was well outside the White House and still building his public career. He had served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy under Woodrow Wilson from 1913 to 1920, a post that brought him into frequent contact with officials, officers and the press. The picture's date places him just after that wartime service, when he was weighing his next move in politics. Because the record does not name the companion, the image is best read as a record of Roosevelt's appearance and bearing in the years before his 1932 presidential election.
