This portrait of Thomas Jefferson is a detail from a larger engraving of the Declaration of Independence, so he appears as one of the figures tied to the document he drafted. The record credits James Barton Longacre with the engraving after a painting by Bass Otis, and lists John Binns as publisher, with a date of 1818. By then Jefferson was in his mid-seventies and retired at Monticello, though his reputation as the Declaration's author had grown into a national symbol. The record comes from an older caption card and has not been fully verified, so the attributions are worth checking against other sources.
